HSAM (Help the Street Animals of Morocco) was founded by Claire Sedgwick, a Registered Veterinary Nurse and her partner, Rob White.
Whilst holidaying in Essaouira in 2006, they witnessed that many animals were in a poor state of health. HSAM was formed upon their return.
HSAM’s first trip was in September 2007. In a space of 10 days, 107 cats were sterilised and c.200 kittens were given vital treatment.
Our Approach
Our approach moves away from the familiar sanctuary/rescue model. Our work will never see animals confined in cages; instead we return each cat and dog to its familiar surroundings, (excepting those few whose needs require a permanent home), reducing stress and maintaining a stable, healthy population.
Our veterinary procedures are carried out using sterile techniques. We have provided up-to-date equipment and medical supplies from the UK, making each operation as safe as possible for each animal in our care. Experienced Veterinary personnel and animal handlers travel to Morocco for each trip.
Our work is authorised by the local government (Pasha) of Essaouira and we work in collaboration with Dr Adnan El Aji, a local Veterinary Surgeon.
